Area Beaches Star in New Airport Campaign

First-of-its-kind promotion targets 17 million tram passengers at Tampa International

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (December 21, 2010) - Whether they're coming or going this Holiday Season, passengers at Tampa International Airport will be reminded that they could be "boarding" on the nearby beaches of St. Pete/Clearwater.

A series of advertisements touting the proximity of the area's 35 miles of award-winning coastline to Tampa International Airport (TIA) were installed last week on trams that move guests to and from the airside terminal.

The colorful ads, which are printed on semi-transparent window clings, are the first of their kind to be instituted at TIA---a facility that serviced nearly 17 million passengers in 2009.

Featuring multiple beach images with messages that play on airplane themes, the spots include a design that declares "Now Boarding 30 Minutes West" over pictures of a skimboarder and paddleboarder. Another shows close-ups of toes firmly planted in sugar-white Gulf sands with the following tongue-in-cheek message: "A Lot More Fun Than Removing Your Shoes for a Security Agent."

The ads feature all new photography, which was shot this summer in various locations throughout the St. Pete/Clearwater area. Those images will also be used in the all-new Visitor Guide due out in January, as well as in collateral for an upcoming winter promotion in NYC and a "100 Days of Summer" program that launches next year.

The campaign, which continues through 2012 and includes similar ads in the airport's baggage claim area, is part of a larger initiative to target TIA passengers through a variety of unique and creative promotions.

More than 22,000 cars each month of the airport's Hertz Rent-a-Car fleet will be adorned with hangtags promoting the new Dali Museum. The tags display the distinctive face of Salvador Dali on the front, with a map, area information and the VisitStPeteClearwater.com URL appearing on the back.
