St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (February 10, 2011) - Some of the world's top BMX racers will make the trek to Oldsmar this weekend to compete in the Gator Nationals, one of the extreme sport's most prestigious contests.
Presented by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, the event takes place February 11-13 at Oldsmar BMX---the dynamic track located inside the city's Canal Sports Complex. The American Bicycle Association sanctioned track is the only one of its kind in the area.
"We're thrilled to welcome this unique event back to Oldsmar for the 3rd consecutive year," said Kevin Smith, Director of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission. "It not only gives us an opportunity to showcase a top-notch BMX facility, but it also helps demonstrate how versatile we are as one of the nation's premier sports tourism destinations."
The bicycle motocross race will carry even more clout this year, with the addition of its International Cycling Union (UCI) category 3 points status. The Oldsmar race will hold more point value than any other American event held at a public track this year.
Throughout the weekend, Olympic athletes from the 2008 Beijing games and 2012 hopefuls will compete for points towards Olympic qualification. The USA Cycling Junior Development races will feature 2016 contenders vying for a spot at one of four camps to be held at the Olympic Training Center.
In addition to the professional racers, the ABA BMX National Series will present the top male and female amateur riders at a variety of age-and-skill levels beginning with the 5 & under novice class through the 61 & over cruiser class.
The action heats up on Friday with registration and practice taking place from 2 to 5 p.m. Racing will begin that evening at 6. Registration and practice kicks-off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, with the races at 11:30 a.m. On Sunday, the gates open at 7 a.m., with race action starting an hour later.
Admission to the Gator Nationals is free, while a full-day parking pass is available for just $5. For more on the event and Oldsmar BMX, visit http://www.oldsmarbmx.org.
