Saturday's Celebration Highlights Park's Rich History, Famed Beaches

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (May 9, 2013) - Consistently named among America's top beaches by TripAdvisor, as well as "Best Family Beach" by Parents magazine and North America's #1 by Stephen "Dr. Beach" Leatherman, Fort De Soto Park has much to celebrate. This year the renowned park commemorates 50 years of captivating visitors from across the globe.
In honor of the park's Golden Anniversary, the Friends of Fort De Soto Park recreated the original park dedication photo (left) that starred 1963 Miss Florida, Gloria Brady. The updated version below features 2012 Miss Florida Laura McKeeman and a bit more color.
Visit St. Pete/Clearwater rolled out a videohighlighting Fort De Soto Park's conquistador history, many amenities and growing Hollywood allure of the 1,100-acre park that attracts more than 2.7 million visitors a year.
A virtual celebration is taking place online a Facebook album, Pinterest board and Instagram/Twitterphotos. Fans can share their sights from around the legendary park by using the hashtag #50Views.
The celebration at Fort De Soto gets under way at 9 a.m. with sea oat planting followed by a re-dedication ceremony, water ski show and an appearance from McKeeman. The Friends of Fort De Soto Park are sponsoring a community cookout, giveaways throughout the day and live music.
