National Events, Airport Rally to Promote $6 Billion Local Industry
Wednesday, May 4, 2011
St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (May 4, 2011) - In observance of National Travel and Tourism Week, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater (VSPC) will host a series of localized events to champion tourism and show support for the area's number one industry.
This year's National Travel and Tourism Week takes place May 7-15, but VSPC will kick-start the celebration on Friday, May 6, with a luncheon at the Riverside Grille House in Tarpon Springs.
Film producer Bob Engelman will be the special guest as we celebrate our own 'tourism tale' with an insider's perspective on the making of Dolphin Tale, the major motion picture based on and starring Clearwater Marine Aquarium's Winter the Dolphin.
While tickets to Friday's gathering have sold out, all industry supporters are encouraged to join VSPC and Tampa Bay & Company at a regional rally for tourism on Tuesday, May 10, at Tampa International Airport.
Our local observance of the national movement will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Landside Terminal (Level 3, Transfer Level) and will feature comments from local leaders and a surprise "red-carpet greeting" for visitors arriving via the airside trams.
The St. Pete/Clearwater area welcomed more than five million overnight visitors in 2010, resulting in more than $6 billion in economic impact. In addition, the tourism industry accounted for 82,000 jobs for local residents last year.
National Travel and Tourism Week is sponsored by the U.S. Travel Association. To learn more about this annual event and the positive impact tourism has on our communities, visit their website
