St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (November 9, 2010) - More than 1,800 domestic and international competitors will test the limits of fatigue and fortitude this weekend as one of the area's elite athletic events returns to St. Pete/Clearwater.
Presented by Ford, the 2010 Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 takes place Saturday, November 13, with participants swimming, biking and running 70.3 miles through Clearwater and its surrounding areas.
Competitors earn the right to compete in the World Championship by qualifying at one of nearly 50 Ironman 70.3 events held worldwide.
"It's always a real treat to host endurance athletes of this caliber," said Kevin Smith, Director of the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission. "Our continued partnership with Ironman reinforces our place as a leader in the sports tourism industry."
Beginning from Clearwater Beach's Pier 60 at 6:45 a.m., the 70.3-mile long route takes athletes along a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run.
Universal Sports, a division of NBC Sports, will be on hand to tape the entirety of the race and will air a 60-minute special on NBC in the summer of 2011.
Professional athletes will compete for a $100,000 prize purse. Each age group winner will automatically qualify for the 2011 Ironman World Championship 70.3.
In addition to serving as the launch point, Pier 60 will host the Ironman retail store, a tech service center and a free expo, beginning on Wednesday, and leading up through Saturday's race day.
A welcome dinner Thursday night and a post-race awards banquet Saturday night will be held at Sand Key Park. Tickets for either event can be purchased at http://www.active.com/triathlon/clearwater-fl/foster-grant-ironman-world....
There is no admission fee and spectators are encouraged to come out and root on these incredible athletes. Fans can also follow all the action from their home by visiting http://www.ironman.com/.
Beginning next year, World Triathlon Corp.---the Tampa-based owner and organizer of Ironman---will launch the 5150 Triathlon Series, with the circuit's finale being held in Clearwater Beach on November 12. The new course features a 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride and a 10K run and is expected to draw a wider range of athletes.
