St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (March 17, 2010) – The golf world shifts its attention to St. Pete/Clearwater this week as the PGA TOUR returns to Palm Harbor’s Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club for the 2010 Transitions Championship.
Beginning Thursday, March 18, nearly 150 of the sport’s most skilled competitors will attempt to conquer the famed Copperhead Course, including its daunting ‘Snake Pit’---the name given to the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, which rank among the fourth hardest set of finishing holes on any PGA TOUR course.
Three of the world’s top-ten ranked golfers---Steve Stricker (#2), Ian Poulter (#5) and Jim Furyk (#7)---will be among those vying for the tournament’s $5.4 million purse. Other notables include John Daly, Kenny Perry, Stewart Cink and last year’s Transition’s champ, Retief Goosen.
In addition to prize money, participants are competing for FedEx Cup points that will qualify and seed them for the PGA TOUR playoffs---a series of four high-stakes tournaments that begin in August.
The Transitions Championship begins Thursday at 7:45am with the tournament’s 1st Round. Friday’s 2nd Round and Saturday’s 3rd Round set the stage for what is sure to be an exciting Final Round on Sunday. The weather is expected to be classic St. Pete/Clearwater area springtime, with highs hovering around the mid-seventies and lows in the fifties.
The action will be broadcast on the Golf Channel from 3 to 6pm on Thursday and Friday and at the same time on Saturday and Sunday on NBC.
In addition to witnessing the world-class action on the links, spectators can take part in a host of special events at the ‘Healthy Sight Village’ beyond the 18th green, including learning how healthy vision impacts athletic performance and how to live an overall healthier lifestyle.
Guests can also swing by the ‘LensCrafters Kids Zone’---complete with exciting entertainment and games for the whole family---and hear how general fitness impacts their golf game at the ‘Competitive Advantage’ area.
Sponsored by Pinellas Park-based Transitions Optical, the tournament will benefit more than 100 local charities. In the last five years, more than $9 million has been donated, bringing the total contributions to more than $24 million over the event’s 33 year history.
Tickets are available at participating Publix Super Markets, online and by calling the tournament office at 727-942-5566. Tickets purchased in advance are $40 per day and $95 for a weekly badge, with those 17 and under admitted free.
