St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (February 10, 2012) - Rockin' runners from around the country will descend on St. Pete/Clearwater this weekend for the debut of the area's newest endurance event.
The inaugural Rock 'n' Roll St. Pete Half Marathon will welcome more than 8,000 competitors, their families, supporters and a host of live musical acts.
Following a two-day expo set to take place today and tomorrow inside Tropicana Field, Sunday's race will kick-off at 7:30 a.m. from the Trop.
"We're honored to partner with the Rock 'n' Roll series on what should be one of the country's premier races," said Kevin Smith, Director of the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission. "The area has a long history of hosting endurance athletes and we're excited to continue that tradition with a new half marathon."
The scenic race course will take runners along Central Avenue' unique downtown shops and restaurants, past the iconic Dali Museum and Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, and along the beautiful downtown Bayfront before an exhilarating finish at North Shore Park. Finishers can literally dip their toes in the bay upon completing the 13.1 mile distance.
Along their journey through St. Pete, local musicians will keep runners motivated and entertained with live music at each mile marker of the course. Enthusiastic cheerleaders and thousands of spectators bring together a unique running experience only found at a Rock 'n' Roll event.
A special Spectator Party will take place between Mile 3 and 4 in front of Fusion 1560 and Ferg's Sports Bar and Grill, welcoming neighbors to cheer on the runners together. Following the race, runners can relax and enjoy a rockin' concert---headlined by hip hop superstar Flo Rida---and beer garden at the Finish Line Festival in North Shore Park.
The pre-race expo, which is open to the public from 12 to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, will feature over 60 exhibitors showcasing the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health and nutritional information and more. All runners must visit the expo to pick up their race number, swag bag and event t-shirt.
But Sunday's half marathon won't be the only Rock 'n' Roll-themed event to make its debut in the St. Pete/Clearwater area in 2012. Event organizers and the City of Clearwater announced this week that the Land Rover TriRock Series---a circuit of triathlons created by the organizers of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series---will hold this year's series finale in Clearwater on November 11.
That event, which will include both intermediate and sprint distances, will start with a swim in the water off Clearwater Beach, include a scenic course highlighted by the Memorial Causeway Bridge and a final run along Beach Walk. TriRock Clearwater is expected to attract approximately 1,000 participants and will be followed by a post-race party with a concert on the sand.
