St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (May 12, 2010) – It’s official: Tampa Bay will be the site of the Republican National Convention in 2012.
The Tampa Bay area edged out fellow finalists Salt Lake City and Phoenix to secure hosting duties for the GOP’s presidential nominating convention, which will be held the week of August 27, 2012. A total of 50,000 visitors are expected in the area over a five-day period, including some 10,000 to 15,000 members of the media.
This marks the third time Tampa Bay has been a finalist for the convention, which is expected to bring an economic impact of nearly $170 million.
—We can’t stress how pleased we are that the Site Selection Committee has chosen to hold the 2012 Republican National Convention in our area,” said DT Minich, executive director of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.
—An event of this magnitude will not only bring us much needed tourism business, but will also put the entire Tampa Bay area in the international media spotlight for several days, which is priceless,” he added.
The convention comes as particularly welcome news to the local hotel industry, since late August is traditionally one of the slowest times of year for area tourism.
In late March, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and Tampa Bay and Company co-hosted the RNC Site Selection Committee for a whirlwind three-day tour of the area, highlighting hotels and various facilities on both sides of the bay and rolling out the red carpet at every stop. RNC staff returned for a short follow-up visit in late April that focused solely on hotel properties.
Though the week’s major events will take place at Tampa’s St. Pete Times Forum, events on both sides of the bay should keep hotels, restaurants and countless other businesses buzzing with activity throughout.
