VSPC Wins ‘Best of Show’ in Statewide Competition

‘Ambassador’ Ad Campaign, ‘No Coats Required’ Outreach Honored With Flagler Awards

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (August 25, 2009) – Visit St. Pete/Clearwater took top honors in three categories at last night’s Flagler Awards, including the much-coveted ‘Best of Show’ award for excellence in tourism marketing.

The awards were announced last night at the closing of Visit Florida’s Governor’s Conference, the state tourism board’s annual state-of-the-industry meeting taking place in Miami this week. 

VSPC’s new Ambassador Campaign, which features personalities ranging from Salvador Dali to a Tarpon Springs sponge diver, won in the Magazine/Print Category, edging out four other finalists from around the state. 

Also honored with a Flagler Award was the bureau’s —No Coats Required” coat-check marketing outreach at London’s World Travel Market, one of the world’s largest international tourism shows. 

But the real surprise of the evening came at the end of the ceremony, when VSPC was presented with the Florida Commission on Tourism’s —Best of Show” award, an all-around recognition of excellence in tourism marketing and destination promotion.

Local tourism officials were elated with the news.

—This is an amazing honor for St. Pete/Clearwater,” said Commissioner Calvin Harris, Chairman of the Pinellas County Tourist Development Council. —And it proves that not only do we have the best beaches in the U.S., but we also have some of the country’s best destination marketing as well.” 

For VSPC Executive Director DT Minich, the awards were the culmination of a team effort.

—These awards honor everyone in the St. Pete/Clearwater tourism community,” said Minich, pictured above with VSPC Advertising Director Debbie Meihls and Assistant CVB Director David Downing. 

—To have such a spectacular VSPC team, the resources to effect these kinds of quality promotions and the support of a forward-thinking Tourist Development Council makes my job a pleasure,” he added. Minich also praised the efforts of BVK, the CVB’s advertising agency of record.

Named for the vision and perseverance of industrialist and Florida real estate promoter Henry Flagler, the Flagler Awards were established by the Florida Commission on Tourism to recognize creativity and innovation in tourism marketing in Florida. 

The annual Flagler Awards are open to all individuals, private businesses and not-for-profit organizations offering a product or service that promotes tourism to or within the state of Florida.
