ABC, Grand Prix Speed into St. Pete this Weekend

IndyCar Series race to be broadcast live to a national audience on Sunday

Thursday, March 22, 2012

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (March 22, 2012) - Featuring a record 10 races over three days, including Sunday's Izod IndyCar Series season opener, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg tears into town this weekend with sizzling hot action on and off the track.

Huge crowds are expected to flock to what's been dubbed the 'World's Fastest Spring Break Party,' along St. Pete's palm-dappled bayfront. World-class museums, sidewalk cafes and luxury yachts moored just feet from the action provide a Monaco-like setting for one of the racing world's most exciting and anticipated contests.

The celebration begins later today with USF2000 (5:35 p.m.) and Star Mazda (6:10 p.m.) practice sessions, followed by the popular Festival of States parade at 7:30 p.m. A fan-favorite since 1969, the illuminated parade winds its way through downtown St. Petersburg.

Throughout the weekend, speed enthusiasts can witness a variety of racing circuits qualifying and competing on the streets of St. Pete, including the IndyCars. St. Pete's 1.8-mile-long, 14-turn track starts on runway 7/25 at the Albert Whitted Airport, twists and turns through downtown, then hugs the waterfront on Bayshore Drive.

ABC will broadcast Sunday's IndyCar race live at 12:30 p.m., with live streaming of onboard cameras on ESPN3.

But street racing isn't the only attraction you'll find at the Grand Prix. The event will also feature a 5K run, autograph sessions, beer gardens, fireworks, interactive games and exhibits and other family-friendly entertainment.
