St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (February 24, 2011) - More than 100 gymnastics teams from the United States, Canada, South America and the Caribbean will flip, twist and twirl into the St. Pete/Clearwater area this weekend for the 23rd Annual Gasparilla Classic.

Presented by Lightning City Gymnastics and the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission, the event takes place February 25-27 at St. Petersburg's Tropicana Field. Male and female athletes age 5 to 18 will compete for an individual and team crown in a variety of USA Gymnastics and Amateur Athletic Union skill levels.

"We're pleased to welcome the Gasparilla Classic back to the area," said Kevin Smith, Director of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission. "Hosting this type of event at a unique venue like Tropicana Field says a lot about our versatility as a top sports tourism destination."

With three days of action on tap, the stadium's grounds are equipped to simultaneously host seven women's meets, one men's meet and an all-star cheerleading competition.

Commonly referred to as "The Trop" by locals, the downtown landmark is just minutes from cultural gems like the Dali Museum and the Chihuly Collection, a bevy of restaurants and the area's award-winning beaches.

Team trophies will be awarded in each division, with the winning teams in the Women's Open Division and Men's Level 10 Division also picking up equipment gift certificates. A large vendor area with merchandise and equipment will be open inside the competition arena.

Admission for adults is $25 for a weekend pass or $15 for the day and $15/$10 for children and seniors.

In addition to the gymnastics action, the King of the South Showdown---a two-day cheer and dance competition---will take place concurrently on Saturday and Sunday.
