St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (March 16, 2011) - The golf world shifts its attention to St. Pete/Clearwater this week as the PGA TOUR returns to Palm Harbor's Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club for the 2011 Transitions Championship.
Beginning Thursday, March 17, nearly 150 of the sport's most skilled competitors will attempt to conquer the famed Copperhead Course, including its daunting 'Snake Pit'---the name given to the 16th, 17th and 18th holes, which rank among the hardest set of finishing holes on any PGA TOUR course.
With 14 of the top 25 players in the Official World Golf Ranking competing, this year's field represents the best compilation in tournament history. Tour superstars Steve Stricker, Ian Poulter, Jim Furyk, Retief Goose and John Daly will be among those vying for the tournament's $5.4 million purse.
In addition to prize money, participants are competing for FedEx Cup points that will qualify and seed them for the PGA TOUR playoffs---a series of four high-stakes tournaments that begin in August.
The Transitions Championship begins Thursday at 7:45am with the tournament's 1st Round. Friday's 2nd Round and Saturday's 3rd Round set the stage for what is sure to be an exciting Final Round on Sunday.
Beautiful weather is expected all weekend, with classic St. Pete/Clearwater area springtime temperatures in the mid-seventies, and a barrage of sunshine.
The action will be broadcast on the Golf Channel from 3 to 6pm on Thursday and Friday. For the 3rd and Final Rounds on Saturday and Sunday, tournament play can be seen from 1 to 3pm on the Golf Channel and from 3 to 6pm on NBC.
In addition to witnessing the world-class action on the links, spectators can take part in a host of special events at the 'Healthy Sight Village' beyond the 18th green, including learning how healthy vision impacts athletic performance and how to live an overall healthier lifestyle.
Younger guests can also swing by the 'LensCrafters Kids Zone'---complete with exciting entertainment and games for the whole family---for a complimentary vision screening.
Sponsored by Pinellas Park-based Transitions Optical, the tournament will benefit more than 100 local charities. In the last five years, more than $9 million has been donated, bringing total contributions to more than $24 million in the last 33 years.
Tickets are available at participating Publix Super Markets, online and by calling the tournament office at 727-942-5566. Tickets purchased in advance are $30 per day and $89 for a weekly badge, with those 17 and under admitted free.
