Salute to Geckos, Corvettes Highlights Labor Day Weekend

From block parties to beach movies, holiday festivities abound in St. Pete/Clearwater

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (September 3, 2010) - Labor Day might be considered the end of summer in some parts of the country, but not in St. Pete/Clearwater. The non-stop action continues throughout the fall, starting this weekend with a slew of Labor Day events sure to please every taste.

Chief among the holiday festivities is the 10th annual Gulfport Gecko Fest, which returns this Saturday from Noon-10 pm along historic Gulfport's Beach Boulevard. The waterfront community's whimsical salute to the gecko features strolling performers (pictured), live music, a parade and over 200 vendors peddling food, drinks and wares.

And for those who prefer to celebrate without reptiles, here's a rundown of some of the other action to be found this weekend in the St. Pete/Clearwater area: 

St. Pete's First Friday - Get downtown and kick start your holiday weekend with this St. Pete block party. Enjoy live music, food and drinks on Central Avenue, between 2nd and 3rd Streets. Festivities begin at 5:30 pm. 

Shephard's Old Skool 3 Labor Day Weekend - Legendary hip-hop acts Naughty by Nature and Young MC will perform this weekend at the Shephard's Beach Resort on Clearwater Beach. The weekend long celebration will have live entertainment and dancing.

Corvettes at the Pier - The annual Suncoast Corvette Show will bring more than 100 Corvettes (from 1953 to the present) to the St. Pete Pier on Saturday at 9 am. 

Arts & Crafts Festival - Also beginning at 9 am on Saturday, this 5th annual event will take place at the corner of Tarpon Avenue and Alt. 19 (Pinellas Ave.) in Tarpon Springs. With handmade arts & crafts, antiques, live entertainment and more, you're bound to be entertained. Call 727-937-6100 for information. 

Celebrate Oldsmar - On Saturday, beginning at 5 pm, visit R.E. Olds Park for kids activities including fireworks, pony rides, live music and carnival rides. 

Movie on the Beach - Bring a blanket or chairs and find your spot in the sand as the city of Treasure Island presents Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The film can be seen right on the beach behind the Bilmar Beach Resort at 9 pm.
