Red tide will be present off the Pinellas County Coast this Father’s Day weekend, but there are resources available to help visitors and residents decide which beach to visit.
BeachesUpdate.com provides the latest reported conditions at the county’s beaches. Clicking on a yellow triangle brings up a window with wind direction, speed, red tide levels and respiratory irritation levels.
Pinellas County’s water quality testing on Friday showed concentrations of K brevis ranging from very low to high. Low levels were found at Fort De Soto Park, and very low concentrations were found at Pass-A-Grille, Treasure Island and Fred Howard Park. Madeira Beach and Honeymoon Island State Park had high concentrations, and Clearwater Beach, Sand Key Park and Indian Rocks showed medium concentrations.
Pinellas County and the coastal municipalities continue to keep the beaches and waterways as free of dead fish as possible. The County’s contractor had three boats working the Intracoastal Waterway in Clearwater and Dunedin on Friday. County and city crews worked the beaches by hand and with tractor-pulled rakes.
The bloom has been moving north in the Gulf of Mexico, and USF predicts that movement to continue.
