Marketing and communications executive Ed Cassidy has been named to the newly created position of brand manager for Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, the destination marketing organization for Pinellas County.
In making the appointment, VSPC interim director David Downing noted Cassidy will be responsible for corporate communications, development and implementation of organization-wide brand standards, and strategic sponsorships and promotions.
Cassidy will join VSPC on Oct. 6.
Cassidy brings more than 20 years of marketing, promotions and public relations experience to VSPC. Most recently, he was marketing director for Taubman Fair Oaks in Washington D.C., which during his tenure grew to 24 million annual visitors with sales in the top 2 percent of all U.S. retail centers. Prior to that, Cassidy served as vice president of communications and event marketing with USA Today, where he led branding, marketing and sponsorship initiatives in travel and hospitality, sports, arts and entertainment, health, education and finance.
Cassidy is known locally for his tenure as marketing director for the St. Petersburg Times (aka Tampa Bay Times), where he pioneered a series of marketing firsts for any U.S. media company---including naming rights of the St. Pete Times Forum---as well initiatives with Taubman International Plaza, Sembler's Centro Ybor, St Pete's former BayWalk shopping complex and University of South Florida sports.
"Ed's breadth of experience and connections on the local, national and international level make him an extremely valuable asset to our marketing, promotions and brand development," said Downing. "On top of that, he's a great guy, and he'll bring even greater depth to VSPC's amazingly talented, creative and dedicated staff."
Cassidy also led marketing for the Tennessean/Nashville Banner, and was editor and publisher of Honolulu city magazine.
Cassidy, who is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, BrainReserve, CMO Council and American Advertising Federation, has previously served on the boards of numerous local organizations, including Ruth Eckard Hall, American Stage, Gulf Coast Museum of Art, Mahaffey Theater Foundation and Tampa Bay Business Committee for the Arts.
A native of Hawai'i and author of the "Hawai'i Trivia" series, Cassidy holds both and MA and BA in communications from Syracuse University.
