Facebook "Likes" Top 100K for Visit St. Pete/Clearwater

VSPC Social Media outpaces NYC, London, Chicago and other tourism world giants

St. Pete/Clearwater, FL (June 6, 2012) - After less than three years since the launch of its Facebook brand page, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater this week announces a social media milestone: its 100,000th Facebook page "like."

Breaking the 100,000 mark puts VSPC in an elite group of destination marketers, surpassing the number of page likes collected by the official tourism agencies for NYC (43,971), Chicago (25,802), London (78,870) and Miami (59,333), among others.

"Our social media presence has given us an immediate and cost-effective way to promote the destination to potential visitors" said David Downing, Deputy Director of Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater. "It's a terrific resource for our visitors, and it gives us an opportunity to interact with them very directly while having some fun with our well-established and well-loved brand."

With more than 900 million users worldwide, Facebook is the most popular social networking site in existence. In fact, according to the Economist, if Facebook were a physical nation, it would be the third-most populous country on earth. 

Since it's page inception in March 2009, the site has drawn visitors to the page to swap stories, share ideas for vacations, view photos, participate in contests and get the latest on area news and activities. This interactive quality has created a sense of community among visitors, locals and industry, allowing the page to effectively host everything from celebrating a simple sunset photo to acting as an online gathering place for those mourning the loss of St. Petersburg resident and racing legend Dan Wheldon.

Not surprisingly, females make up the overwhelming majority of users who like VSPC on Facebook (80%), though the top combined age demographics for both genders 35-44 (31%) and 45-54 (31.8%), lend credence to the notion that social media is used by much more than just teenagers.

Fans of the page hail from a variety of areas, including the Tampa Bay area, Orlando, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, which are all major domestic feeder markets for VSPC area.

Based upon the success of the domestic US Facebook page, VSPC has recently launched market-specific Facebook pages for the United Kingdom and German markets, where pages will be tailored specifically to cater to their respective markets with oversight by VSPC's satellite offices in those markets.
