St. Pete/Clearwater (June 16, 2015) - The world's best sand volleyball players are kicking off the Road to Rio in St. Pete this week.
In anticipation for the Rio de Janerio 2016 Olympic Games, the smart FIVB St. Pete Grand Slam presented by AVP serves as the first qualifying opportunity for those Games. The free event at St. Pete's Spa Beach Park runs from Tuesday-Sunday, capping with two days of action live on NBC from 4-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
"To have one of the summer Olympics' major sports kick off its qualifying in our destination speaks to the broad appeal of our area as a major sports tourism destination," VSPC Executive Director David Downing said. "From Grand Prix racing to Major League Baseball to PGA Golf, professional soccer and year-round AAU tournaments---and now an Olympic qualifier being broadcast live nationally on NBC---the St. Pete/Clearwater area is establishing itself as a major sporting destination."
2012 Olympic Silver medalist April Ross headlines the women's field, while the men's side is highlighted by a handful of Olympians, including 2012 Silver medalists Brazilians Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego. In total, athletes from more than 20 countries are competing over six days.
General admission tickets are free and there are VIP tickets available to buy.
